Pre-Owned Patek Philippe: A Buyer's Guide for First-Time Purchasers
Patek Philippe makes some of the most sought-after watches in the world. Here is what first-time buyers need to know before entering the market.
Read ArticleThere is arguably no watch more synonymous with luxury and status than the Rolex Submariner. Introduced in 1953 as a functional dive tool, the Submariner has evolved over seven decades into the definitive benchmark luxury sports watch — copied by hundreds of manufacturers and coveted by millions. If you're entering the pre-owned market, the breadth of available references can be overwhelming. This guide walks through the major references, what differentiates them, and how to think about value at each price point.
The Submariner exists in two core configurations: with date (currently reference 126610LN or 126610LV) and without (reference 124060). The no-date model has a cleaner dial symmetry and is often preferred by purists. The date model features a Cyclops lens magnifier and has historically been the higher-production variant. For pre-owned buyers, the no-date commands a slight premium among collectors, while the date version is more widely available across all price ranges.
The reference 5513 (produced from 1962 to 1989) is the grandfather of all no-date Submariners — matte black dial, clean symmetry, and an aesthetic that defines the classic dive watch silhouette. Well-preserved examples with matching-era dials and bracelets fetch strong prices, but the appeal is largely collector-driven. The 1680, introduced around 1969, brought the date complication to the Submariner for the first time and is the earliest Submariner date reference. Buying vintage Rolex requires significant expertise: dials age, service histories are often incomplete, and the parts market for replacements is not always legitimate. These are watches for experienced collectors.
For most buyers looking for a pre-owned Submariner that wears well daily, the reference 16610 (date, produced 1989–2010) and 14060/14060M (no-date) represent exceptional long-term value. These watches use the Caliber 3135 (date) or 3000/3130 (no-date) — movements that are well-understood, widely serviced, and nearly indestructible with proper care. The 16610LV (green bezel "Kermit"), produced from 2003 to 2010 to mark the Submariner's 50th anniversary, has become particularly collectible. Pricing for clean examples with box and papers has held firm for years.
In 2010, Rolex introduced the reference 116610, featuring the new Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert that replaced the aluminum insert used on all prior models. Ceramic does not fade, resists scratches, and gives the watch a more refined look. The 116610 retained the proven Caliber 3135 movement with a 48-hour power reserve. In 2020, the 116610 was replaced by the 126610, bringing a significant upgrade to the Caliber 3235 (70-hour power reserve), a slightly larger 41mm case, and a redesigned bracelet with the Oysterlock and Glidelock clasp. New retail prices are essentially theoretical given allocation constraints — pre-owned 116610s remain the most practical entry point for buyers who want a ceramic Sub without dealer waiting lists.
The short answer: they matter, and they matter more as time passes. A complete set (original box, booklets, hang tags, and papers showing the reference and serial) typically commands a 15–25% premium over the same watch without documentation. More importantly, papers tie the watch to its production date and provide a baseline for authenticity. For investment-minded buyers, always prioritize full set over incomplete. That said, a well-documented service history from a reputable watchmaker can partially offset the absence of original papers.
When we list a Submariner, it has been through our full authentication process. We verify the movement caliber against the reference, inspect the dial, confirm serial number alignment, and assess condition honestly. We do not grade watches generously — if a case shows significant wear, we say so. Our pricing reflects current market conditions, and we are always available to discuss a watch's history, condition, and value before you commit.
