Pre-Owned Patek Philippe: A Buyer's Guide for First-Time Purchasers
Patek Philippe makes some of the most sought-after watches in the world. Here is what first-time buyers need to know before entering the market.
Read ArticleOne of the most common questions we hear from customers is simple: how often does my watch need to be serviced? The answer depends on the brand, movement age, how frequently you wear it, and whether the watch has been exposed to shock, water, or extreme temperature changes. Understanding the basics will help you protect your investment and avoid the kind of expensive damage that results from neglected maintenance.
Rolex currently recommends a service every 10 years for modern movements under normal use. This is a significant extension from their previous 5-year recommendation, reflecting improvements in lubricant technology and movement finishing. Omega recommends a complete service every 5–8 years, along with an annual water resistance check. Patek Philippe recommends service every 5 years, reflecting both the complexity of many of their movements and the specialized lubricants they require. IWC takes a notably different approach — rather than setting a fixed interval, they officially recommend servicing only when you notice a deviation from normal performance, function, or timekeeping, with the interval determined by your individual wearing habits. These are guidelines, not hard deadlines — a well-running watch with sealed gaskets may go longer, while a watch showing timing deviation or unusual sound needs attention sooner.
Don't wait for the calendar if your watch is showing symptoms. Common signs that a service is overdue include:
- Losing or gaining more than a few seconds per day, especially if the watch previously kept excellent time - The crown feeling gritty or difficult to operate - The watch stopping unexpectedly despite being wound - Unusual noise from the movement — grinding, rattling, or a change in the sound of the rotor - Any evidence of moisture inside the crystal
If a watch has been dropped or struck, have it examined even if it appears to be running normally — internal damage is not always obvious from the outside.
Vintage movements — generally those manufactured before the 1990s — typically require more frequent attention. Older lubricants break down faster, tolerances are less precise by modern standards, and gaskets dry out more quickly. For a vintage watch you wear regularly, a 3–5 year service interval is prudent. For a vintage piece worn occasionally or stored, have the movement inspected every 5 years regardless of running condition. Dried lubricant can cause the same damage whether the watch is running or sitting still.
A complete watch service involves fully disassembling the movement, cleaning every component ultrasonically, inspecting for wear or damage (replacing any worn parts with manufacturer-spec components), re-lubricating, reassembling, regulating to spec, and pressure-testing water resistance. The case and bracelet are typically cleaned as part of the process. A good service restores a watch to near-factory performance and should come with a service guarantee. At Down South Timepieces, our repair department performs full-service overhauls on all major luxury brands and provides documentation for every service we complete.
Running an unlubricated movement causes metal-on-metal wear to pivots, jewels, and gear teeth that cannot be reversed — only corrected with replacement parts. A standard service that might cost $400–$800 can become a $1,500–$3,000 movement rebuild if a worn pivot causes a gear to fail. The mathematics are straightforward: regular maintenance is always cheaper than neglect. If you're unsure of your watch's service history, have it assessed before the question becomes urgent.
